El Colegio de Veterinarios de Alicante (Icoval) ha creado un protocolo para regular las condiciones de acceso de animales domésticos a los hospitales para visitar a los pacientes ingresados.
Será el único encuentro entre pacientes ingresados con patologías severas o pacientes de larga estancia en el hospital con sus propias mascotas, aunque ya se había probado anteriormente el proyecto "Can de la mano" en un hospital de Valencia y para los pacientes de oncología y pediatría. Ésta vez, será en los Hospitales Universitarios de Torrevieja y Vinalopó (Elche).
Investigaciones recientes demostraron con el paso de los años que la presencia de los animales de compañía de los pacientes ingresados les aporta tranquilidad y relajación, reduciendo su ritmo cardíaco o la presión sanguínea y provocando efectos positivos en los pacientes.
El proyecto "tiene el objetivo de responder ante las necesidades de los pacientes, que encuentran en la compañía de sus mascotas una forma de alivio, reducción de la ansiedad y mejora de su estado anímico, todo ello con las máximas garantías de seguridad", indicaba Jose David Zafrilla, director adjunto de los dos hospitales donde se realizará el proyecto. Con ésto, la iniciativa aspira a "que las visitas de los perros o gatos que convivían con el enfermo ahora ingresado, o incluso crónico, sirvan para mejorar su estado de ánimo, aumenten su estimulación a los tratamientos, mejore su rehabilitación o, en casos extremos, humanice el proceso de muerte, permitiendo al paciente despedirse de la totalidad de sus seres queridos".
El médico de cada paciente será quien determine el permiso de la visita atendiendo a criterios médicos y determinará si es posible el traslado del paciente a la "zona de encuentro", habilitada especialmente para este proyecto y fuera del área sanitaria. Una vez aprobado el permiso, el veterinario será el encargado de garantizar que el pasaporte del animal acredite sus vacunas, desparasitaciones e identificación mediante chip, además de un certificado emitido con fecha no superior a los tres días previos a la visita, que indique la ausencia de vómitos, diarrea, estornudos, tos o fiebre. El animal deberá estar vacunado contra la Leptospirosis.
Icoval se ha comprometido a asumir los gastos veterinarios de certifiación para aquellos pacientes que acrediten la falta de recursos (mediante un informe de los Servicios Sociales).
